Betting on Lisa Marie to get to No.1 for Charity

On Wednesday June 18th 2003 Elvisly Yours placed a £100.00 bet at 10-1 with William Hill, the famous Bookmakers, that Lisa Marie Presley will get to No.1 in the UK Singles Charts with her first single, "Lights Out", release date June 30th 2003. This was a unique bet and I am afraid no other Elvis fan can take up the offer, although William Hill would also take a similar bet from Lisa Marie. The cancer charity, the "Lynda Jackson MacMillan Centre" will get £1,000.00 if Lisa gets to No.1 and www.williamhill.co.uk have kindly agreed to donate the stake money of £100.00 if she doesn't make the top spot. One of Britain's most famous Elvis Tribute Artists, Liberty Mounten kindly donated his time to help with the charity promotion.

But, I know all you fans who read this and pass it on to your own email lists and put it on your websites will go out and buy "Lights Out" for Lisa, for Elvis and for  cancer charity. If you are overseas you can order from a British Record dealer such as HMV, Virgin, W H Smith, Tesco (call information for UK numbers)

If every UK Elvis fan bought a copy of Lisa’s single she would stay at the top for weeks. Just encourage your family and friends to also buy a copy. Getting Lisa Marie Presley to no.1 in the UK would be a greater achievement than her father, Elvis who only reached no.2 with his first single ‘Heartbreak Hotel’. It wasn’t until ‘All Shook Up’ that Elvis finally achieved the top spot in the UK Charts. ‘Lights out’ is a catchy little number and could easily make it to no.1, but the fact that it is written and sung by Elvis’ daughter gives the single an added boost and it is supported by a great video. Lisa has an uncanny resemblance to Elvis and at certain camera angles you could almost think it was Elvis. Apparently, in person, Lisa is even more stunning and more like Elvis. FINGERPRINTS OF ELVIS

Liverpool, the home of the Beatles is now a new home for Elvis Presley with a superb new Museum opened there on Saturday June 21st 2003. The Museum is under the same management as the fabulous and famous "Beatles Story" Museum in the Albert Dock. Because Elvis had such an impact on the music of the Beatles it was decided to honour this influence with a special Museum dedicated to Elvis Presley with over 100 different Elvis Presley artifacts, including the last Harley Davidson he owned and that famous tandem bike driven all over the MGM set when Elvis was there filming and featured extensively in the original version of "That's The Way It Is". There is jewellery, clothing, Dr Nick's Mercedes often driven by Elvis and the car Dr Nick used when he drove up to Graceland when he heard the bad news on August 16th 1977. The name "Fingerprints of Elvis" came from a key exhibit, namely the actual fingerprints of Elvis. So the next time someone finds Elvis there is one sure way to prove the truth with his actual fingerprints, now on display at the Albert Dock, Liverpool. The style of the Museum is similar to the 'Beatles Story' and essentially tells the Story of Elvis, narrated mostly by Elvis' stepbrother, David Stanley. You are given a set of headphones as you go around the Museum. Each exhibit is carefully marked and you simply press the relevant number on a handset to hear all about that aspect of Elvis' life. Further narration is provided by Elvis' early drummer, DJ Fontana. 

'Fingerprints of Elvis' is highly educational and when you have viewed all the Exhibits you will have a real feel for the man and his music. You may well leave the Museum in tears as the final exhibit is a replica of Elvis' grave with a sad and solemn narration while you watch the scenes from the newsreel of the day of the funeral. For those sad souls who cling on to the belief that Elvis is alive, I think they will finally realise at the end of the Exhibition that "Elvis has left the Building" but we are left with his music, his films and our loving memories. 

We are trying to persuade the owners of this wonderful Elvis Museum to change their Elvis logo. Such artwork works well for John Lennon, an expert doodler, but just does not work for Elvis Presley. Some years ago we took the late Vince Everett's collection to Japan for an Exhibition at the Mitsukoshi Department Store. You can view the two different Elvis Museum logos and what do you prefer ? The design makes me cringe every time I see it and it just isn't the Elvis we all know and love.

 New Elvis Musical :  'Jailhouse Rock'

 London is to host a new Elvis musical based on the Movie 'Jailhouse Rock' but will feature much more of Elvis and his life. This is the first  Elvis Musical for years in the UK after the long-running success of "Elvis - the Musical". The mythology of "Elvis the Musical" is that the producers had done a deal with the Colonel in August 1977 to launch the Musical in Britain in 1978. On their arrival back in Britain they discovered that Elvis had just died so they brought forward the Show by many months and launched it at the Astoria in London. Shakin' Stevens and P J Proby achieved stardom after appearing in the original musical. 

The musical ran on and off for many years until Elvis Presley Enterprises got involved and then, I was informed, demanded too much money from the producers and it had to finish its run. It was a great show as was the later Elvis Show called "Are You Lonesome Tonight" with Martin Shaw playing Elvis. 

For those who have not seen 'Jailhouse Rock' the musical follows a young man who is sent to prison where he discovers a love of R&B and gospel music, setting him on the path to a singing career. But he discovers he is not ready for the corruption that money and fame can bring with it. It is from the people who made the Stage Musical "Buddy" and I am sure this new show will be a smash hit. It is due to open at the end of the year.

"ELVIS26"

A TRIBUTE TO THE LEGEND OF ELVIS
In aid of terminally ill Children

August 16th will be 26 years since Elvis Aaron Presley left this world and we aim to honour his memory in style this year in Brighton. If you can't make it to Memphis this year, then why not come to the City by the sea for "ELVIS26".

Our special "ELVIS26" event is in aid of the ‘Chestnut Tree House Appeal’ which is a hospice for Children with terminal illnesses and allows for the Children and their families to live in comfort in those last days together. This hospice is very much like ‘St. Judes Hospital’ in Memphis, which Elvis himself donated much money to in his life time and so we are only too pleased to be able to help this wonderful cause in some way.We hope to raise £3,000 so if you cannot make it on the 16th, then why not help us by donating some money? Anything will help. Ask your friends and family to contribute £1.00 each and pretty soon we will reach our target for these Children. Our very special guest is Donna Presley Early, the first cousin of Elvis. She lived at Graceland and also on Elvis’ Circle G ranch. 


 Donna’s mother is Nash Presley, the sister of Vernon, and Donna has many wonderful memories of life with Elvis the man.Her book, "Elvis - Precious Memories" will be available to buy at the event and she will be signing copies for the fans. Donna will also be holding a short Q&A session for those wishing to ask questions.

The event will include a talk by Donna Presley, Elvis Disco, Raffle, Tribute Artist, Jive Show, and Elvis shop.

Tickets cost £15.00 and can be purchased from our usual address.

The venue is the HILTON METROPOLE HOTEL on Brighton seafront. Tell EVERYONE, and together we will raise money for the Children and make their last days more comfortable and all in the name of Elvis Presley.

THE KING AT THE PALACE

This story has been told before, but it never ceases to intrigue, so for those who have not heard it, it is well worth telling again.  It comes from our good friend Sid Shaw, Elvisly Yours in London, who is a champion of Elvis and has fought many battles on his behalf.
 
To cut a long story short, way back in about 1980, Sid commissioned an Elvis statue to be made, and after it was unveiled by Charlie Hodge in 1981, found that he had no home for it as no museums wanted to take it for FREE.  So the Elvis statue had several temporary homes,  including the big pop radio station in London called "Capital Radio, and later the "Mall Galleries" near Buckingham Palace.  They were a little early to deliver the statue, so while waiting for the galleries to open, Sid thought it would be nice to take a few pictures of the KING at the PALACE!!
 
Sid telephoned one of the big newspapers, the "Daily Mirror" and they took pictures of our Elvis at Buckingham Palace.
 
Sid had driven up in his van with his staff, and the sculptor, and unloaded the KING for some snaps.  The Police went mad!!   (It was shortly after a man called Michael Fagan had broken into the Palace and sat on the Queen's bed chatting to her).
 
So the Police were very nervous about security, and there was Sid and friends, with a life size Elvis statue outside the gates.  As it turned out, Sid wasn't quite arrested but certainly manhandled and dragged by a Policeman (6ft. 6ins tall), to the statue and was screamed at impolitely  ...... "geddit outta here!".
As Sid later quipped, the Police marked the Elvis statue:  "Return to Sender!"
Don't you just love this gem of a story!  We can't help wondering whether her Majesty was looking out of her window that day, and if so, why she did not rush down to the gate to invite Sid and "the King" in for tea, it would have been the polite thing to do!
 
We would like to know more about the sculptor and who he was, how long it took to complete, and what the statue is made of.  We understand the statue is now enjoying celebrity status in the Elvisly Yours shop, 233 Baker Street, London.  On the other side of the road is the famous Madame Tussauds waxworks, the country's biggest tourist attraction, and on the other side is number 221B, the residence of Sherlock Holmes, probably the world's most famous detective.
